Beyond the Closet: Designing a Life You Can Live In
From runway influences to heirloom interiors, discover why the home is no longer a backdrop, but the jewelry box of your life.
Fashion has long been the language of self-expression. From the way we choose fabrics, textures, and silhouettes, to the way we embrace personal style, clothing has always been a mirror of who we are (from the young to the old). But increasingly—especially among Gen X and Millennials—that mirror extends beyond the wardrobe and into the home. For these generations, interiors have become as much a marker of identity and lifestyle as fashion ever was.
As Martina Mondadori of The Business of Fashion recently put it: “The fashionisation of the home—and the elevation of interiors to the level of fashion—is not a trend. It’s deeply rooted in the reality that self-expression doesn’t end with what you wear.”
At Admiral Landings Designs, we couldn’t agree more.
From Runway to Living Room
Just as fashion invites us to step into identity, interiors invite us to live within it. The bold floral wallpaper, the velvet sofa, the carefully chosen lampshade—these are no longer simply decorative elements. They are statements, much like a tailored blazer or a favorite pair of shoes.
An AI-rendered vision of our Aster Lampshade™ styled in a richly layered setting. Just as fashion invites us to step into identity, interiors invite us to live within it. The bold florals, the velvet sofa, the curated palette—each detail carries intention. The Aster is not simply a lampshade, but a statement piece, much like a tailored blazer or a favorite pair of shoes. It’s the jewelry of the room—an emblem of taste, personality, and the art of living beautifully.
In fact, we’re seeing more crossovers than ever between the worlds of couture and interiors. Armani/Casa, Versace Home, Hermès, and Dolce & Gabbana Casa all illustrate how heritage fashion houses have extended their storytelling beyond clothing into curated interiors. Fabrics once meant for gowns now upholster armchairs, runway palettes migrate into living rooms, and the home itself becomes a canvas for couture. Home is no longer a backdrop; it’s a runway of its own—where even the jewelry takes the form of light.
The Lampshade as Jewelry for the Home
I’ve often been heard saying that lighting—specifically lampshades—are the jewelry of the home. Just as an outfit feels unfinished without the right necklace or earrings, a room can fall flat without the right shade. Lampshades add the sparkle, the finish, the unexpected detail that transforms the ordinary into something extraordinary.
A plain white lampshade is like leaving the house without accessories: it works, but it doesn’t sing. A handcrafted shade, however, functions the way a couture jewel does—it commands attention, tells a story, and feels deeply personal. It’s the finishing touch that elevates the entire ensemble of a room. And it’s effortless.

Just as fine jewelry completes an ensemble, the Kat elevates the room with a bold statement of color, pattern, and light. Its artistry transforms the bedside into a curated moment of luxury—proof that lighting, like adornment, is what turns design into self-expression.
Slow Interiors and Lasting Luxury
Much like the growing shift back to slow fashion—where quality, craftsmanship, and individuality outweigh mass production—the same values are being embraced in interiors. People are moving away from “fast home decor” and leaning into heirloom pieces that hold weight, intention, and artistry.
And while this framing feels especially relevant in today’s marketplace, it is far from a new idea. The blending of fashion, home, and cultural identity has long existed—take, for example, the history of Black Dandyism, which I’ve explored previously. In that tradition, both dress and domestic space became a canvas for resistance and elegance: a declaration that artistry and individuality belong in every corner of life. Today, when we speak of slow interiors, we are echoing that same call to elevate the home beyond function into living, breathing self-expression.
This is precisely where luxury home brands like Admiral Landings step in. Our handcrafted lampshades, each made to order, are not just lighting—they’re functional works of art, the kind of timeless “jewelry” that crowns and completes a space. They align with the rhythm of slow living, where the choices we make are as meaningful as the lives we lead.
Why Home Is the New Fashion
Identity: Just as a wardrobe reflects personality, interiors now reflect it too.
Emotion: What you wear influences how you feel; so does the light and design in your home.
Status: A curated home is now as much a marker of taste and lifestyle as a wardrobe.
Creativity: Interiors are becoming a canvas for personal creativity, just like fashion styling.

The Aria shows how lighting influences not only the mood of a space but also the way we feel within it - the atmosphere. A thoughtfully curated home, much like a wardrobe, has become a marker of taste and lifestyle. Here, design becomes a canvas for creativity—layering light, texture, and craftsmanship with the same artistry as couture.
Beyond the Hype, Toward Permanence
Mondadori leaves us with a thoughtful question: “Do we really want the home business to follow fashion in its ‘always on’ marketing and endless product drops? Wouldn’t that threaten the very essence of what makes a home meaningful — craftsmanship, permanence, individuality?”
At Admiral Landings Designs, our answer is clear: no, we don’t want to replicate fast fashion in interiors. What makes a home meaningful is precisely what makes our work meaningful—its permanence, craftsmanship, and individuality.
We are, however, excited about the emergence of luxury, heirloom, and curated interiors being likened to couture and the great fashion houses of old—houses like Hermès, Armani, and Versace, where craftsmanship and individuality remain at the heart of every collection. Where the fast side of the fashion industry often leans into speed and excess, we lean into intention. Our lampshades are not mass-produced trends to be cycled through and forgotten; they are functional works of art designed to last, to be treasured, and to become part of the story of your home—just as those sought-after luxury vintage fashion finds become timeless pieces in a wardrobe.
“Always on” may have its place on the runway, but in the home, what matters most is not endless newness, but enduring beauty. That is the essence of designing a life you can live in.
Yours Truly,
The Illuminated Designer™
